How to lose weight in menopause |
Many women gain a few pounds during the menopause and weight gain around the stomach is one of the most common complaints. Weight loss during and after the menopause can generally be approached in the same way as at other times in a woman’s life although it may take longer due to changes in hormone balance in the body.

Menopause weight loss can be achieved by focussing on eating healthily and increasing levels of daily activity. Eating healthily and weight loss go hand in hand. If you concentrate on making your diet as healthy as possible you will find that weight loss naturally follows. I recommend keeping a journal of everything that you eat for at least 2 weeks to find out what your eating habits really are and to work out which foods you need to be eating more of and which ones you need to cut back on or eliminate from your diet.

You will be astonished at how many “empty” calories you unconsciously pop into your mouth without even being aware of it, but writing it down really raises your awareness!

Here are the foods that you should be eating more of: fruit and vegetables, whole grain foods such as brown bread, brown pasta and brown rice. Try eating more seeds and nuts, fresh herbs and natural spices all of which are rich in minerals and have anti-oxidant properties. Make sure that your diet includes a regular source of lean protein such as chicken or fish.
As we get older and our metabolism slows we need to take in fewer calories each day. We would all like to continue being able to polish off nice big helpings of our favourite dinners, but simply trimming portion sizes by 10-20% can lead to effective weight loss.

It is important to get as much exercise as possible if you want to lose weight. Simply walking for half an hour extra each day will help to burn calories and help you to stay in shape, and it’s much cheaper than joining a gym!
