Control my weight during menopause

 

During the menopause your body starts to store fat around the stomach because the body is producing less oestrogen.  This can lead to higher rates of diabetes, hypertension and certain forms of cancers as abdominal obesity is a contributing factor for them.  Cholesterol levels also tend to rise again caused by a lack of oestrogen, so it really does pay to keep an eye on all of this!

 

 

Weight gain is a common factor for many women going through the menopause although it is not directly caused by the menopause.  Weight gain can be put down to eating more calories than we need each day as we require fewer  calories each day as we get older.  As we get older we tend to exercise less and not be as physically active meaning that fewer calories are burnt each day.  Physical and mental disruption can lead to people seeking comfort in food which can lead to weight gain.

 

 

To control your weight during menopause it is necessary to limit the number of calories each day.  At the age of 40 we require 20% fewer calories than at the age of 20 due to the slowing of the metabolism.  Not taking this into account will lead to continual weight gain.  A daily intake of between 1300-1500 calories each day will be sufficient to control your weight.  Most of these calories should come from nutritionally dense foods such as fruit, vegetables, grains, beans, fish, low fat dairy and lean meat.  You should be also eating more fibre and try cutting back on alcohol and caffeine consumption. There is a suggestion that too much coffee heightens your desire for sweet things!

 

 

To help control your weight it is important to exercise regularly as it helps to lower levels of LDL cholesterol (bad fat) and increase levels of HDL (good fat).  Regular exercise helps to boost the metabolic rate as well as releasing feel good endorphins into the bloodstream.


Most importantly of all, something which is often overlooked is our relationship with food, why we feel that we have to comfort eat in the first place? I have a wonderful “secret” which I would like to share with you.............
